Quilt-making

Learn the time-honored tradition of quilt-making at Sincere Studio! Our quilt-making classes are designed to inspire and spark curiosity and confidence in budding quilt-makers. Curious about quilt-making but not ready to fully jump in? Try our Improv Quilting class where you'll learn foundational concepts in patchworking. Ready to make your first quilt? Join us for a five week introductory course that walks through each step of the process, from cutting fabric properly to binding your finished quilt. We offer one-off classes on different skills in our Quilter's Workshop series. These rotating offerings change throughout the year so be sure to check back!

Improv Quilting

Level 1 | $45 | 2.5hrs | Ages 16+

Required: Intro to Sewing or equivalent skill level

In this class, you’ll learn three different techniques for using scraps to make simple patchwork. This is a great class for anyone who’s quilt-curious and/or looking for a creative and relaxing way to unwind and play with fabric. All materials provided, although you can bring your own scraps if you desire!

Please note we will only be making the quilt top, i.e. a single layer of patchwork. We will not be constructing the entire "quilt sandwich."

Topics covered:

  • Sewing machine set-up refresh

  • Selecting fabrics for patchwork

  • Three different ways to patchwork fabric together including log cabins and crumb quilting

Optional Materials:

  • your own fabric scraps to use for patchwork

Sincere Studio will provide:

  • fabric scraps

  • thread

  • all tools and machines

  • a handout to take home covering each technique

Intro to Quilt-making

Level 2 | $277-$395 | 3hrs; 5 weeks | Ages 16+

Required: Intro to Sewing  + 1-3 small-medium projects OR  Intro to Sewing and Intro to Sewing II OR equivalent skill level

This class requires about one hour of homework each week to finish on time, relative to your sewing skill level. Open studio hours are included in class fee.

Learn the time-honored tradition of quilt-making in this five week class! We’ll discuss materials, tools, and techniques used throughout the quilting process as we go step-by-step together. Students will go home with a 30”x30” mini quilt. All materials provided.  A fabric list will be sent upon signup if you would like to purchase your own fabric.

Topics covered:

  • Quilting terms, techniques, and best practices

  • Fabric prep, squaring and cutting precise, on-grain pieces with a rotary cutter and quilting rulers

  • Piecing (sewing patchwork)

  • Sewing flying geese

  • Techniques for pressing and creating beautiful, square quilt blocks

  • Quilt construction, including the quilt sandwich and basting techniques

  • Three different quilting techniques

  • Tools for quilting including using a walking foot

  • Making straight-grain binding and sewing it

Optional materials:

  • All tools and machines

  • Cotton batting

Quilter's Workshop - Binding

Level 2 | $75 | 2.5hrs | Ages 16+
Intro to Sewing  + 1-3 small-medium projects OR  Intro to Sewing and Intro to Sewing II OR equivalent skill level

Quilter's workshops are bite-sized classes teaching one quilt-making skill.

 

In this class, we'll be focusing on binding--how to make it, sew it onto a quilt, and finishing techniques. Students will use studio-provided samples to practice on.

Topics covered:

  • Making straight-grain binding

  • Sewing binding strips together with diagonal seams

  • Using a walking foot, including how to install it

  • Techniques for starting and ending binding for a neat and tidy finish

  • Sewing techniques such as turning corners, creating mitered corners

  • Topstitching tips and tricks

  • Overview of processes for hand-stitched binding vs machine-stitched

Optional Materials

  • Notebook and pen for taking notes
