Hand Sewing + Mending

Hand sewing and mending are the perfect compliment to any sewist's skillset! From sashiko to darning to embroidery, you'll leave these classes feeling confident about different stitches and when to use them. Our hand sewing classes build on each other so be sure to start with Hand Sewing Techniques to build a strong foundation.

Hand Sewing
Techniques

Level 0 | $60 | 2.5hrs | Ages 16+

No experience required

Begin your hand sewing journey with this two and half hour intro class! This class will start with an overview of tools used in hand sewing. Students will learn a variety of stitches that can be used for different applications including mending, quilting, and garment making. Time will be reserved at the end for students to ask questions. All materials will be provided, although students are welcome to bring their own stitching supplies from home if desired. Students are also welcome to bring a notebook to take notes.

Topics covered:

  • Choosing fabrics and materials to stitch with 

  • Helpful tools for your sewing kit

  • A variety of stitches and their uses, such as hand quilting, sewing on patches, and hemming pants

  • Tips and tricks for managing thread, tying knots, and more! 

Optional Materials:

  • Pen + notebook for note-taking

  • Fabric for practice sampler

  • Needles

  • Thread

Embroidery Basics

Level 2 | $125 | 3hrs | Ages 16+

Required: Hand Sewing Techniques (or equivalent experience). Intro to Sewing is not required as this class will not use a machine.

Come learn the basics of hand embroidery! In this class we will learn a variety of different stitches to create beautiful and unique embroidery designs. All materials are provided and students will receive an embroidery hoop to take home.

Topics covered:

  • Selecting fabric for embroidery projects

  • Using an embroidery hoop

  • Choosing different types of needles and floss

  • Starting and ending embroidery stitches cleanly

  • A variety of embroidery stitches

  • Techniques for finishing and displaying your work

Optional materials:

  • Needles

  • Embroidery floss

  • Fabric

Mending Skills - Sashiko

Level 1 | $60 | 4hrs | Ages 16+
Required: Hand Sewing Techniques (or equivalent experience). Intro to Sewing is not required as this class will not use a machine.

Learn to repair and decorate textiles with beautiful stitches! In this two and a half hour introductory class, students will learn the basics of mending and reinforcing woven fabrics using stitching inspired by Japanese sashiko.

Note: we will briefly discuss techniques for patching at the start of class, but there will not be class time dedicated to applying patches. If you would like to bring a mending project with you that has a large tear, please patch it before class.

Topics covered:

  • Creating stitching patterns

  • Transferring designs onto fabric

  • Selecting thread and needles

  • A variety of traditional sashiko stitches

  • Starting and ending stitching cleanly and securely

Optional Materials

  • Notebook and pen for taking notes

  • Thread

  • Needles

  • Backing fabric

  • all other tools needed

Radical Mending

No experience required

Free - RSVP Required | 2hrs | Ages 16+

Hand sewing only. Machines will not be available for use.

Bring up to three items in need of mending and learn new skills from community members! Volunteers will be assisting participants in mending clothing, bags, toys, and more. Whether you are completely new to mending or just need a little advice, volunteers will work you one-on-one to help you with your mending goals. 

 

See below for what volunteers can and can't assist with.

This event is for mending only--we won't be able to do any clothing alterations during this time

We can help with:

  • Rips and holes

  • Patching

  • Sewing buttons back on

  • Fixing undone and open seams

  • Reattaching some hardware to clothing and bags

We cannot help with:

  • Zippers

  • Darning (repairing holes in) knitted things like socks and sweaters

  • Fixing fancy stuff 

  • Alterations like hemming and taking things in

Sincere Studio will provide:

  • Materials for mending and patching. Participants are welcome to bring their own materials!
